January has been giving Colorado some warm-day teasers this month. And with that comes warm memories of summer. And to me, summer means camping with outdoor adventures and being surrounded by good friends. I’ve been reminiscing of a particular camping trip from a couple of summers ago which will probably become a yearly tradition; camping in The Great Sand Dunes.

If you haven’t heard of the Sand Dunes in Colorado, simply try to imagine a section of the Egypt desert being dumped in the middle of the mountains. Or real-life Aladdin. Or God’s sandbox, whichever you prefer. There’s no way to really describe it. The Sand Dunes are majetstic, mysterious and wondrous. They almost look imaginary when you see them for the first time. They’re unreal.

This camping trip was a spur-of-the-moment with some good friends at the end of the summer. One of my best friends from Hawaii was actually visiting at the time so I was even more thrilled to show her the Dunes. We camped at the base and climbed to the highest peak of the Dunes the next day. What a workout!!! And then, in Colorado-style, we used the snowboard to get to the bottom.

Can’t wait for summer in the Dunes…
